Fwd: The Trouble With Food Marketing To Children

By Cliff Walsh
U.S. food companies spend billions of dollars (estimated between $10-$15 billion) annually advertising its products to children. Cartoon characters, free giveaways, interactive websites, movie tie-ins, and other methods are used to draw children in and condition them to want a particular product and become loyal to the brand in question. Oftentimes, the actual food is barely shown.

The importance placed on children is not to be understated. Not only do they impact their caregiver's purchasing habits with unfair manipulation like kicking and screaming, they will also one day be buying for themselves and their own children. It is a potent strategy that gets kids to want to buy now and come back for more. Hopefully, for decades, if the food companies get their way. Research suggests that kids under 18 see up to 20 commercials a day for food. This can equate to over 7,000 over an entire year and over 100,000 over 15 years. How do you counteract this kind of enormous influence?

I looked at some processed-food packaging in the grocery store this morning in anticipation of writing this article. The first thing you notice when you look at any food product packaging, targeted to children or not, is that the marketing claims and labels are on the front of the package and substantially larger than the actual ingredients, which are never on the front, but on the side, back, or bottom.

When you look at the marketing that is directed to kids, did you ever notice how large the movie or cartoon character is? It's usually the whole front of the box while the actual food product is non-existent or much less prominent. If we are lucky enough to see the actual food on the package, it is often photoshopped or bolstered in some way to make the food looks better than it really is, like using glue instead of milk to make the cereal "float" better.

TV advertisements are highly influential for all people, but particularly children. When kids are in the zone watching their favorite cartoon or show, they are likely in the alpha state, which is a highly suggestible brain state, that is typically used in hypnosis to reach a person's subconscious mind without any gatekeeper. While the responsibility of proper nutrition lies firmly on the shoulders of the parents, these powerful marketing strategies are working against us in a big way, influencing our children against our will.

So if you're a parent, what can you do? First, shop at healthier locales like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's where the products are cleaner and the marketing to children is toned down as the focus is on the health of the product. Also, consider limiting TV to commercial-free stations or those who have committed to holding advertisers to high standards, given the child audience. You also must instill in your child healthy eating habits. Teach them the importance of fruits and vegetables, and the positive benefits they bring. Make them aware of the shortcomings of processed foods. With some children seeing thousands of food adds a year, you have to start early and repeat often.

Fwd: The Link Between Cancer & Pesticides

By Cliff Walsh
Did you know that farmers, pesticide applicators, and pesticide factory workers have higher cancer rates than the average person? The U.S. government doesn't appear to know or at least doesn't care. Despite this very troubling fact, the government allows almost one billion pounds of pesticides to be poured on our food supply each year- a few pounds for each of us. Not only are pesticides in and on our food, but in our drinking water as well.

The purpose of using pesticides is to eliminate insects, bacteria, fungus, and harmful plants from the soil in order to boost crop yields. While there is nothing wrong with boosting crop yields, the manner in which it is done is troublesome. It doesn't take a scientist to see there is not much of a leap necessary to go from killing bugs in the soil to killing cells in the body. These chemicals are believed by many researchers to damage and change our DNA, which can open the door to the accelerated spread of cancer.

Many of these dangerous chemicals are also fat soluble, meaning they can remain in our fat cells for years. I went through about two weeks of detox symptoms when I converted to an organic vegan diet. There were definitely chemicals hitting my blood stream. The most common symptom is a consistent headache.

Despite a lack of government effort, the amount of research that has been done by private organizations on the link between cancer and pesticides is monumental and damning. In a U.S. study, 56,000 farm workers who sprayed pesticides were tested for skin cancer. Results were compared to the workers' time spent administering certain pesticides. The risk of skin cancer increased as exposure rose, to as high as 2.5x more for those with the highest chemical exposure.

The Ministry of Health in Argentina also recently released a report highlighting a massive dichotomy of cancer rates across its provinces, linking the higher rates to increased usage of chemical pesticides. In some areas, cancer rates were more than double that of the areas with lowest chemical usage. Argentina is a useful comparison for the U.S. because together both countries produce roughly 70% of all genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), which require heavy pesticide use.

Pesticide usage has been linked to a wide range of cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma as well as cancer of the breast, brain, lungs, and prostate.

We can't trust the companies making and profiting from pesticides that tell us that there's nothing wrong with them. This is from the same people that gave us Agent Orange, DDT, PCBs, and GMOs. Sorry, but your word is no longer good here. And don't forget Big Tobacco and how hard they fought to keep the lies alive.

I recommend that people avoid pesticides by eating organic produce. If that is a problem because of cost or availability, it is okay to buy non-organic fruits and vegetables that have thick skin or protective shells. Berries and thin-skinned fruits are the most at risk for pesticide contamination. A filter for your water intake is also recommended.

Fwd: Choose Organic Non GMO Supplements

By Colette Foreman
Without the safety of genetically-modified organisms being established by long-term research, many consumers are avoiding them in their food. However, they may not have considered the wisdom of choosing organic non GMO supplements as well. Many nutrients that make up vitamin and mineral formulas actually come from food; with the growing number of bio-engineered plants and animals, screening everything meant to enhance health may be helpful.

Most consumers don't have either the knowledge or the time to investigate on their own. Fortunately, there's a quick way to feel confident. This is in trusting the 'organic' certification of a supplement. Just as with food, this assurance tells the consumer that there are no GMOs in the product. There are only a few companies that produce this kind of food-based and food-quality nutritional aids.

Although there are not many producers, the ones that do offer products made from food that is organically grown and processed offer a full range of products. Consumers should not feel limited, since they should be able to get all that they need. Both single nutrients and multi-vitamin and mineral formulas are marketed.

Of course, single nutrients can be most easily checked. It's the multi-vitamins and formulas that are harder to evaluate with independent research. For this reason, concerned consumers will want to find companies on whose integrity they can rely. Third-party testing, certification, and rating is important when deciding what to purchase and take regularly. Most reputable companies will have toll-free numbers for customer contact, as well as maintaining user-friendly websites.

Just being GMO-free, which is usually announced on the label, does not mean that all ingredients are organic. On the other hand, non-organic ingredients don't mean a product is unsafe. Many herbs are wild-crafted. Other things, like coconuts, may not be grown on certified farms but the growers may not use any herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers, either. Again, using products from a reputable company with truthful labeling is a real comfort.

Since many companies buy their raw materials from outside sources, this makes it even harder to get assurances of complete quality control and purity. There are manufacturers who test every batch of wild-crafted herbs, for instance, or other purchased raw materials to ensure they are both pure and potent. The integrity of the manufacturer is the consumer's safe-guard, so this must be checked out thoroughly.

Since quality dietary health aids are not cheap, it's nice to get the best for the money. With the current safeguards in place both within and outside of the industry, the danger of harm from any supplement is small (especially when compared to pharmaceuticals). However, using the purest products ensures both safety and getting the potency you pay for. An unknown manufacturer is not necessarily an unreliable one, but consumers cannot feel safe without finding out more about the company and its track record.

No one really knows what genetically-modified organisms do to the environment or to people and animals. There are grounds to fear that bio-engineered crops may be harmful to pollinators like bees and butterflies. Consumers who want to get the purest and healthiest products need to take care when buying supplements. Checking out the company of origin and reading the labels of all products is a good start.

Fwd: Weight Loss Success Is Within Your Reach With These Simple Tips

By Mary Zink
Have you ever stared in the mirror for extensive lengths of time after your shower and then turned away frowning? Have you ever felt that that gut of yours is insurmountable? Well you are not alone. This article will help you turn that frown upside down and trim down that waist line.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially if you want to lose weight. When you wake up early and eat a full breakfast you allow your digestive system to wake up and start metabolizing food. This lets your body burn calories from the beginning of the day rather than from lunchtime onward.

To help you lose weight, do not completely abandon foods that you love altogether. This will result in a strong desire for these foods and may end up in binge eating. Just about anything is fine in moderation, and can be a reward for sticking to your diet. As you slowly move away from eating greasy foods, you may find your desire for them lessening over time.

Eating slowly is one of the best things you can do to lose weight. As a society, we tend to rush through everything, including our meals. If you eat too quickly, your brain doesn't have a chance to realize that your body is full. Therefore, you continue to crave more food than you actually need.

A key to losing weight is to cut way down on the amount of fast food you eat. Fast food restaurants serve high calorie foods, which are not only fattening but unhealthy in other ways. Do yourself a favor and try some "fast" ready-to-go foods such as apples and carrot sticks instead.

A good way to stay fit is to avoid eating snacks like chips or cookies. These foods might taste good, but they're very poor in nutrition and won't help you reach your fitness goals. Instead, try snacking on a handful of almonds, or even some pretzels.

If you like playing video games and are thinking about losing weight, the Wii fit might be the right game for you. This game has a variety of features, including a full six minute kick boxing session which, if you follow it correctly, really tired you out and works out your entire body.

To lose weight stay away from processed foods. These foods are loaded with artificial ingredients and subjected to processes that remove almost all their healthy components. While processed foods are designed for convenience, economy and speed, they're not healthy and won't help you lose weight. The benefiters of processed foods are the sellers not the consumers. Stick to healthy, unprocessed foods for weight loss.

The way that you cook your foods is optimal in your quest to lose weight and keep it off for good. Instead of frying your food, you can choose roasting instead. This will preserve the flavor and reduce the amount of fat and grease that you consume on a daily basis.

Want to burn the most fat? Exercise before breakfast. When you wake up in the morning, your body doesn't have as much glycogen/stored carbohydrate to use as energy–which means it will burn fat first. According to one study of runners, two thirds of calories burned before breakfast are fat calories.

If you occasionally want to indulge in a high calorie treat, plan for it. Consider your indulgence as part of your diet plan and make more sensible choices for the rest of the day. An occasional treat won't ruin your diet if the rest of your meals are full of healthy fruits, vegetables, grains, and lean proteins.

Make sure to not skip any meals when trying to lose weight. Skipping meals can put your body into a fat-storing state and will make it harder to burn calories throughout the day. Make sure that your meals are nutritional and healthy and that will keep your body burning calories, all day long.

Your mirror does not have to be your enemy. With the tips and advice offered in this article, it can soon be your friend, as you stare into it smiling thinking, "Wow I look amazing today, I am so glad I read that article." Now that you've finished reading this, get off the computer and go work on shedding those pounds.

Fwd: Finding A Natural Health Blog

By Deanne Shepard
When people are looking for ways to improve their health naturally, they'll likely want to be as proactive as they possibly can. By reading a natural health blog several days each week, individuals can find some tips that will come in handy as they move forward in life. As long as they put their minds to the task at hand, all should be well.

When men and women are looking for a blog to make their own, they should pay attention to the writing itself. Bloggers who do not care for proper spelling and grammar will likely be lacking in other areas. Readers should keep searching until they find a blog that has been well put together. The grammar and the spelling should both be immaculate.

Avoiding processed foods will be a big part of the process. When men and women understand how much ugliness is found in processed food chemicals, they'll be more likely to avoid these products. Toxins from these products can build up inside the body and cause problems for many years. The best course of action is to eat healthy.

Fruits and vegetables should be the linchpins of any healthy diet. These foods contain many vitamins and minerals that the body needs on a daily basis. With dedication, individuals can put together some meal plans that they'll be happy to follow going forward. Leafy greens are especially good for the muscles, bones, and circulatory system. Citrus fruits contain a lot of vitamin C, which is excellent for a boosted immune system.

Meats and cheese should be eaten only in small quantities. These foods contain enormous amounts of fat that can be bad for the body. There is no need, however, for people to try to cut out these foods cold turkey. They can gradually draw down their use until they have been eliminated completely. Fish and chicken will always be better than red meat.

Many men and women decide to keep food diaries so that they can keep track of what they eat. This will help them make better decisions as they move through the days ahead. The food diary entries can be looked over so that individuals can get a better idea of where they are making mistakes. Diaries can significantly help people with weight problems.

It is always a great time to start eating naturally when a marathon is being trained for. Men and women will want to avoid putting certain foods in the body that can harm them. When toxins are avoided, individuals can run fast marathon times. When they get into the heart of their training period, runners will need all the help they can get.

In the end, tracking down a lovely blog should be done as soon as possible. Readers can rely on the blog for good information as they go forward in life. Armed with useful tips on how to eat and live, people should see their health improve. Family and friends will notice the changes and will be impressed with how much the blog has been able to help going forward.

Fwd: Losing Weight Can Be Easy To Do

By Poppy Moss
Weight loss surgery has proven to be effective for most of the patients who have it. Most people who undergo surgical procedures are at least 100 pounds overweight. Some insurance carriers, such as Medicare, might cover the cost of this surgery; however, many patients will have to pay out of pocket.

Start reading labels to help in your weight loss goal. Reading labels will assure you know what you are putting in your body, otherwise, you really have no idea. Knowing what you're putting in your body will give you a better idea of the reason your weight loss is successful or not successful.

To keep your weight loss routine healthy and effective, avoid extreme or "crash" dieting. The ideal diet for healthy weight loss is a sustainable one. By their very natures, crash diets are short-term ordeals. Even though they may offer substantial short-term results, their long-term effect is negligible, or even harmful. It is better to develop a diet you can stick to over time – even permanently.

An effective way to lose weight safely and easily is to do an intense work out just once a week. This work out will boost your metabolism, which means that your body will burn more calories through daily activities. To increase the rate of your metabolism even more, combine this practice with healthy eating habits.

Do not try diet fads, like weight-loss pills or extreme diet plans. Many of these methods might be harmful to your overall health in the long run. In addition, the pounds lost tend to be temporary. Most people cannot stick to a rigid diet and will, most likely, gain back more than the weight they lost.

Think about what you love to eat. Too often, people are distracted during meals and do not really think about it. Enjoy every last bite. If you visit a restaurant and you do not like what you ordered, send it back and get something else. You don't have to eat a food just because you spent money on it. Money is not as important as your health. When thinking about each food choice and making healthy decisions, you will see weight loss start to occur. This is a choice that can be very personal.

A great way to help you lose weight is to choose a day, once a week, where you eat whatever you want and don't follow your diet. When you've been dieting for a while you might notice that you hit a plateau. By eating whatever you want once a week, you actually end up boosting your metabolism.

Separate your good into serving sized containers after you finish food shopping. Use plastic bags and other storage containers to store your portioned out food. When your food is already portioned and measured out for you, it's a great way to prevent yourself from eating too much.

If you are having a lot of trouble stopping at the end of a meal, sprinkle salt or pepper on what is left. This will prevent you from eating it, as your food will no longer look appetizing. This is a great trick that you can use to finish eating towards the end of a meal.

A great way to help you lose weight is to cut out the bun whenever you eat a burger. By cutting out a little bit of carbohydrates from a meal like this, you'll be taking in fewer calories than you normally would. All you have to do is tell them to hold the bun.

One of the best ways to keep track of your weight is by reading food labels. Eating a healthy diet is instrumental and this goes hand in hand with reading labels. It is important for us to know we eat and keeping a good eye at the calorie count is a good way to calculate our daily food portions.

Approximately 20 percent of weight-loss surgery patients have to undergo another surgical procedure to resolve complications that developed from the initial surgery. Some patients may develop nutritional deficiencies because of the surgery. Losing weight quickly also increases your risk of getting gallstones. Weight loss that is prompted by surgery also requires exercise and a healthy diet.

Fwd: Artificially Natural

By Cliff Walsh
Walk down any grocery store food aisle and grab a random package off the shelf. It is most likely covered with marketing slogans and claims like low fat, heart healthy, or perhaps all natural, which to me, is one of the most misleading marketing claims of all. What does it mean? It turns out, very little.

You will see a lot of foods labeled as natural or all natural. It sounds good. Many people think this means something similar to organic. In some consumer polls, the term natural or all natural has even garnered more consumer confidence than organic certification. But unlike organic, which requires USDA inspections and certification, the term natural is mostly meaningless marketing. No government agency, certification group, or other independent authority defines the term on packaging or ensures the claim is truthful.

The FDA oversees the claims made by food manufacturers. They have never given a definition of what a natural or all natural product should consist of. The only statement the FDA has made about these claims is that they do not object to its use if it does not included food dyes, artificial flavors, or synthetic chemicals.

In theory, that sounds like a decently healthy standard. However, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), plants and minerals with high metal content, and more can be used in natural foods. Unfortunately, without a true definition, oversight, or a verification process, it is difficult to put much faith in the natural claim if any producer can put it on its packaging with no consequences. Not to mention, any definition that claims something is natural while accepting GMOs as such carries no weight in my mind.

Without a proper definition, food companies have been allowed to define the claim themselves and this has led to some ambiguity at best and unethical behavior at worst. How many scandals have the food and chemical additive industries been involved in over the past few decades? The list is too long to count, making it obvious to most (but seemingly not the FDA), that these companies should not be left to their own devices.

Despite the government's lack of action on these label claims, consumer groups are taking action, which is refreshing to see. Tired of being lied to and exposed to dangerous ingredients, consumers are holding food manufacturers' feet to the fire. Food manufacturers and retailers have had to defend themselves against a host of significant lawsuits, and have lost quite a few. This is a trend that I expect to persist.

I recommend always reading the ingredients list rather than the marketing claims. The fewer ingredients, the better. Also, if you don't need your chemistry book to figure out what the ingredient is, that's a good sign as well. I urge you to do your homework to understand what's in our food supply and the dangers of some ingredients. Currently, it's on us to police these food companies because the government is asleep at the table.
