Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins are chemicals that come from food used to support the health. Minerals make and break down body tissues, and regulates metabolism. There are many varieties of vitamins and minerals, for example foods containing vitamins A, C and E contain antioxidants, which can help to reduce the ageing process. The Mineral Magnesium helps to convert food into energy. Unfortunately vitamins and minerals can only be sourced by food. This is the reason it is important to have a balanced diet, to ensure essential vitamins and minerals are met.
There are many vitamins and minerals available, but it would be too long to describe each mineral and each vitamin. Below is a summary of the main vitamins and minerals that are popular at the moment.
Vitamin B
Vitamin B has many forms. One of them is called Thiamin. It helps to keep the membranes and the nervous system in order. They can be found in bread, cereals and potatoes. Vitamin B also contains folate, which produces folic acid. This is important for pregnant women in order to reduce the chances of the baby having spinal bifida, which is a certain type of condition that can affect the spine.
The other form is called Riboflavin, which helps in relation to the growth and the development of DNA, and other chemical reactions. They can be found in cheese, fish, yoghurt, red meat, but also beans.
Vitamin C
Also called ascorbic acid, it produces collagen and blood vessels needed for gums and teeth. They can be found in oranges, strawberries, blackcurrants, Brussels sprouts and potatoes.
Vitamin D
This vitamin helps to absorb the mineral calcium and phosphorus, it can be found in sunlight, but it can also be found in eggs, and fish. The elderly, and certain groups of people whom cover their body for religious reasons, are at a greater risk of having a low vitamin D intake.
Vitamin E
This is an antioxidant which can help to reduce the process of ageing in the body. It also produces red blood cells and helps to prevent blood clotting. It can be found in prawns, almonds, nuts and beans.
As stated previously minerals are needed to help chemical reactions in the body. For example sodium helps to control the amount of water in the body used when we are sweating during heavy exercise, or when the weather is at a very high temperature. The body regulates the amount of water in partnership with sodium. There are very many minerals needed for our bodies, some which will be explained below
Found in bones and teeth, calcium helps to keep them strong and healthy. This is absorbed by working with the vitamin, Vitamin D. A suitable intake of Vitamin D is needed in order to avoid reducing the chances of poorly managed gums and teeth. Great sources of calcium include spinach, milk, cheese and almonds.
This is used to produce the pigment in hair, skin, bones and teeth. It is involved in a variety of processes including the protection of body cells against chemical damage, to process iron, and the role of the functioning of the nervous system. Copper can be found in seafood, nuts and wholegrain foods.
This is an essential mineral as it the component of red blood cells. This helps to carry oxygen around the body. Women need more iron than men due to women undergoing certain body changes including pregnancy, childbirth, and heavy menstruation. Anaemia is the most widespread cause of lack of a poor intake of iron. Pregnant and breastfeeding females are at a greater risk. Good sources of these include red meat, fish, pulses and spinach.
Very important in the production of the immune system, especially DNA. It also helps to control the male hormone testosterone, and helps to convert this into the female sex hormone oestrogen. Great sources of zinc include dairy products i.e. cheese, milk and yoghurt, also soya beans, nuts and eggs.
The above gives a clear indication of the importance of consuming a varied balanced diet. The diet should be made up of at least 30% carbohydrate based foods, 30% should be based on fruit and vegetables, 10% should come from dairy foods, high fat and high sugar, and also should come from meat and other alternatives. If a balanced diet is made up of these varieties there should be an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals, needed by the body, to sustain life and health.

Antioxidant Foods And Your Body

Even though a lot of people don’t actually realize it, a lot of antioxidant foods that we consume are from vegetables.  Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, and peppers are all excellent choices with some great benefits for your body.  When consuming vegetables, you should always go for those that are rich in color, as they are high in what is known as phytonutrients.

Phytonutrients are nutrients found in the skins of several fruits and vegetables, which give the food color as well as flavor and scent.  Phytonutrients are quite simply the best types of antioxidant foods that you can find anywhere.  If you are looking for a supplement value, the coq10 offers you a high level of antioxidant value.

Although fruits and vegetables are the best sources for antioxidants, the problem with them is that they are produced by the use of chemical herbicides, pesticides, and different types of fertilizers.  Over the years, studies have shown that fruits and vegetables which are organically grown are high in antioxidants, and boast a much higher concentration than those that have been produced commercially.

In the busy world of today, it can be very tough to eat like we should, nor can we eat organic fruits and vegetables all the time.  If you can’t or don’t have access to organic fruits or other sources of antioxidant foods, you should look into nutritional supplements that offer you the phytonutrients you need in your diet.

Supplements that contain phytonutrients do have advantages when compared to certain fruits, such as carrots – which can elevate your blood sugar level to a very high level.  Phytonutrients found in supplements are the extract of pigments where nutrients are concentrated, meaning that they draw the best from antioxidant foods, leaving the calories and sugar behind.

Don’t get the wrong idea here, fruits and vegetables are indeed good for you.  They are high in antioxidants, although those that are produced commercially generally come with chemicals and such that aren’t so good for you.  Canned fruits and vegetables come with high levels of sugars and calories, which antioxidant supplements don’t have.  The supplements offer you the levels you need, without any chemicals, sugars, or calories.  This way, you don’t have to worry about consuming anything that isn’t good for you.

No matter how you look at it, healthy eating for your body starts and end with foods that contain antioxidants.  There are several types of foods that contain antioxidants, although fruits and vegetables contain the most amounts.  Steak and meat are also great sources of antioxidants, along with other great benefits, such as protein.  Anytime you can’t get foods that contain antioxidants – you can count on supplements to deliver the amount you need to stay healthy.

The K Vitamin

The K vitamin is essential for the blood to clot to repair injuries. Whenever a person has a bleeding wound, it is the K vitamin that is present in the blood that stops the bleeding and enables most minor cuts to heal quickly.

There are three different forms of the K vitamin. The first variant of the K vitamin is vitamin K1, also known as phylloquinone. This is the form of the K vitamin that is found in types of plant foods. Vitamin K found in plant foods. The second form of the K vitamin is the vitamin K2, or menaquinone. This type of the K vitamin is formed by friendly bacteria in the intestines. Thirdly, there is vitamin K3 which is also known as menadione and is actually an artificial form of the K vitamin. All three of these types of K vitamin end up in the liver where it is used to create the blood clotting substances.

The best natural sources of the K vitamin are green leafy vegetables, such as spinach. However, because the friendly bacteria in the intestine makes one of the forms of the K vitamin it is extremely rare for a person to have a deficiency of the K vitamin and so K vitamin supplements are not needed by the majority of people.

Apart from the main function of helping blood to clot, the K vitamin, specifically the Vitamin K1, has an important part to play in the bone building process. This K vitamin is required to retain the calcium in the bones and redistribute it to where it is needed.

Although a K vitamin deficiency is relatively rare there are certain groups of people who may suffer from it. Newborn babies may not have enough of the K vitamin as they have insufficient bacteria in their intestines to produce it. The majority of newborn babies in developed countries are therefore given a K vitamin injection to tide them over until the natural process takes over. That is the only time that a K vitamin supplement will be taken by most people throughout their lives. However, an extended course of antibiotics may lead to a K vitamin deficiency due to the fact that the antibiotics kill the intestinal bacteria as well as the ones that they are being taken to cure. Again, a K vitamin supplement may be given if the course of antibiotics has to continue for a long period of time.

Mineral Vitamin Supplements

The majority of mineral vitamin supplements are made from chemicals rather than natural substances. However, there is a steady growth in the demand for natural mineral vitamin supplements. This is due to the amount of debate that there is as to whether chemical mineral vitamins can be more harmful than beneficial in the long term.

The fact is that chemical mineral vitamin supplements are not as easily absorbed as normal food particles are. The mineral vitamin industry is constantly striving to create products that are more easily processed by the body and therefore more beneficial.

Every now and then the industry comes up with a new ‘more bio-available’ form of a vitamin or mineral. To overcome this, a large number of mineral vitamins have been developed that combine other elements with the vitamins and minerals to enable them to be more easily absorbed by the body. Iron is commonly combined to form iron gluconate which enable the mineral vitamin supplement to be more absorbable.

The amount of a nutrient in a mineral vitamin supplement needs to be far greater than it would be in a more natural form for the body to be able to absorb the amount that is required. This can obviously lead to problem where a toxic level of the particular nutrient is being consumed by the large doses of the mineral vitamin supplement that are needed. It is therefore extremely important that a person does not simply take vast quantities of all of the mineral vitamin supplements that are advertised on television and should seek advice from a health professional. It is also worth being aware of the developments in the mineral vitamin supplement industry as there are constantly new and better combinations being developed.

One method that mineral vitamin manufacturers have developed to help aid absorption is through culturing the raw materials with yeast cells. This form of mineral vitamins are known as ‘food state’ and are up to four times easier for the body to absorb the required nutrients as the yeast is completely digested.

Of course, the need for mineral vitamin supplements depends on the diet that a person has. There is no doubt that it is far more preferable for a person to obtain the nutrients that they require from their food rather than by taking mineral vitamin supplements wherever possible. During certain periods it may be necessary for a person to take mineral vitamin supplements on a temporary basis but their long term use is not recommended for a number of the supplements that are available.
